FIRE SAFETY STRATEGY
Sandown Court operates a STAY PUT fire strategy.
The building has been designed and constructed to resist the spread of fire between flats.
If a fire occurs in another flat and your flat is not affected by smoke, heat or fire, you should normally remain within your flat unless instructed otherwise by the
Fire and Rescue Service.
IF A FIRE STARTS IN YOUR FLAT
• Leave your flat immediately.
• Close doors behind you.
• Use the staircase to leave the building.
• Do not use the lifts.
• Call 999.
• Move to a place of safety.
IF THERE IS A FIRE ELSEWHERE IN THE BUILDING
• Remain in your flat unless affected by smoke, heat or fire.
• Call 999 if necessary.
• Follow instructions given by the Fire and Rescue Service.
IF YOU ARE IN A COMMUNAL AREA
• Leave the building immediately using the nearest available staircase.
• Do not use the lifts.
FIRE DOORS
Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.
Residents must:
• Never wedge fire doors open.
• Never remove door closers.
• Never alter flat entrance fire doors
• Ensure flat entrance doors close properly after use.
• Report any damage to fire doors.
ESCAPE ROUTES
Corridors, lobbies, staircases and exits form part of the building’s means of escape.
Residents must not:
• Store bicycles in communal areas.
• Store furniture in communal areas.
• Leave personal belongings in communal areas.
• Obstruct corridors or staircases.
• Leave rubbish in escape routes.
BUILDING SAFETY
Residents should immediately report any concerns relating to:
• Fire doors.
• Emergency lighting.
• Smoke control systems.
• Access control systems.
• Structural defects.
• Lift safety concerns.
• Obstructions to escape routes.
• Any issue which may affect the safety of the building.
BUILDING SAFETY ACT INFORMATION
Residents have the right to:
• Raise building safety concerns.
• Request relevant building safety information.
• Make complaints regarding building safety matters.
• Participate in resident engagement and consultation activities relating to building safety.
SECURITY
Residents should:
• Keep access fobs secure.
• Ensure entrance doors close properly.
• Not allow unknown persons into the building.
• Report lost fobs immediately.
• Report suspicious activity.
LIFTS
Lifts should not be used during a fire unless instructed otherwise by the Fire and Rescue Service.
If trapped in a lift, use the emergency communication system and await assistance.
REFUSE
Residents must dispose of refuse using the designated refuse facilities.
Rubbish must not be left in corridors, staircases or communal areas.
EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
Residents who may have difficulty evacuating due to mobility, sensory or cognitive
impairments should contact the Management Company so appropriate emergency planning arrangements can be considered.
